The prohibition era
The Prohibition Era started in 1920 and lasted till 1933, it was an attempt to legislate morality. In an attempt to make alcohol legal, more and new crimes were committed and created in an effort to make alcohol consumption legal. Throughout the 19th century temperance movements were being held and were sweeping through the United States. But is wasn't until WWI when the anti-alcohol movement had a chance to enact the ban of alcohol consumption. December of 1917, congress passes the 18th Amendment in an attempt to ban any consumption of alcohol. During this time many people would go to secret hiding places and drink. Many of these hiding places were called speak easies, which were hidden bar type places.Also during the prohibition era many mobs were formed and many gangsters and outlaws were springing up. For example Al Capone, Vito Genovese, Dutch Schultz, Jack "Legs" Diamond, Charles "Lucky" Luciano, John Dillinger, and Bugsy Siegel. Later on December 5th, 1933. The federal government ratified the twenty first amendment, which appealed the eighteenth amendment, making the consumption of alcohol legal.
