The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, and known in Vietnam as the Resistance War Against America or simply the American War. As the war went on, the role of the Viet Cong. in the war had decreased. The U.S and the south vietnamese relied on air support and overwhelming fire power. Overtime the north vietnamese airspace became the most heavily defended airspace of any other in the world. The U.S. government viewed American involvement in the war as a way to prevent a Communist takeover of the South Vietnamese. With the disappointment of the results with the war by the U.S. led to the gradual withdrawal of U.S. ground forces as part of a policy known as Vietnamization, which aimed to end American involvement in the war while transferring the task of fighting the Communists to the South Vietnamese themselves.
